Abstract
The Marquis and Marquise de La Fayette and Their Plantations in French Guiana (1785–1802)
Following the American War of Independence, the Marquis de La Fayette sought to demonstrate that a colonial plantation could be operated outside the system of slavery. However, several factors prevented the endeavor from succeeding, despite the unwavering commitment of the Marquise de La Fayette:
- A lack of familiarity with colonial realities, particularly those specific to French Guiana.
- The great distance to the colony, which largely deprived the owners of control over the management of their plantations.
- A property dispute with the adjacent royal estate, "La Gabrielle."
- The political volatility surrounding the French Revolution and its aftermath.
- Challenges that proved beyond the couple’s control, including the contradictions and indecision of the colonial administration, as well as the private interests of the agents and administrators—many of whom were plantation owners themselves.
