Abstract
Is an increased timber harvest reasonably feasible?
The annual timber harvest in mainland French forests is, on average, well below the net growth rate; this results in a recurring annual accumulation of standing timber stock.
However, mobilizing more of the timber resource is constrained by environmental, social, and—above all—economic factors.
The net balance between growth and harvesting varies significantly across regions.
The projected increase in harvesting volume is 11 million cubic meters (Mm³) by 2030; achieving this requires stepped-up forest renewal to ensure adaptation, the development of incentives for wood use—particularly as a material—and increased recycling.
