Abstract
Magical plants, from antiquity to biotechnology: what are they?
A magical plant is a plant to which traditions attribute supernatural powers linked to love, healing, protection, or malevolent spells.
Four main categories of magical plants are distinguished: plants associated with love (purity, seduction, fertility), white magic (protection and healing), black magic (fear, curses, toxicity), and "deceptive" plants with a dual nature (benevolent or malevolent depending on rituals and dosages). These are cultural constructs—subjects of beliefs, healing practices, rituals, and fears—whose significance varies according to culture and usage.

Abstract

Magical Plants: Current Trends and Future Prospects

Plants described as "magical"—regarded throughout antiquity and history as bearers or conduits of supernatural powers—actually contain, in the vast majority of cases, pharmacologically active compounds. These substances explain their historical use in rituals involving love, protection, and hexes, as well as their status as "deceptive" or "dual-purpose" plants.
Their use persists today—notably within New Age circles—in the form of dietary supplements, aphrodisiacs, and symbolic products, fueling various agricultural sectors and a significant global market.
In our increasingly complex and uncertain global landscape, many continue to interpret current challenges through frameworks inherited from the past, often tinged with nostalgia. Yet, a quiet transformation is underway. New plant biotechnologies are poised to introduce enhanced plants perceived as magical—not due to belief, but due to performance: capable of withstanding the climate, purifying the environment, and regenerating ecosystems. Thus, the age-old alliance between humans and the plant world could be renewed in a novel, technological form.
