Abstract
Drought: What are the risks for forests?
Water stress affecting trees results from high evaporative demand and low water availability in the rooted soil.
Physiological regulatory mechanisms and anatomical adjustments, which vary according to species, allow trees to respond to stress, but at the expense of growth and carbon sequestration.
Intense and prolonged water stress can lead to hydraulic (embolism) or carbon dysfunctions that can result in dieback or even the death of the tree. Climate change is having a significant impact on soil water availability, and the worsening of this trend will affect forest ecosystems.
Keywords: climate change, evapotranspiration, stress, dieback
